In an indication that more major studio tentpoles are going to use at least some 3D conversion, Legend3D, the San Diego-based 2D-to-3D conversion shop, has hired veteran visual effects supervisor Scott Squires. Squires, a longtime staffer at Industrial Light & Magic whose credits include "Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace" and "Van Helsing," will work on helping Legend3D integrate its tech with vfx-heavy tentpoles that mix stereo photography with 2D-to-3D conversion. Of the major digital 3D releases to date, only "G-Force" has deliberately mixed the two approaches. No new such titles have been announced, so the hiring of Squires by Legend3D is a strong indication that more announcements are coming. "Legend3D is currently under contract with several Hollywood studios and is handling exciting projects that require the level of vfx capabilities that Scott Squires will be able to provide and leverage for new and existing clientele," company said in a statement. Among the major vfx tentpoles set to shoot in 3D are Disney's "Pirates of the Caribbean 4" and Paramount's "Transformers 3."
